Suicide: An Understated Scar

Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one’s own life voluntarily and intentionally.
A word that many people like to avoid.
Every day, families around the world lose someone close to them due to suicide. Suicide is an unfortunate occurrence that happens among all age groups; however, teenagers are the age group most affected.
The teen years are a stressful time. They are filled with major physical and psychological changes. Strong feelings of stress, confusion, fear, and doubt may affect a teen’s problem-solving and decision-making. It is also a time of sexual identity and relationships and a need for independence that often conflicts with the rules and expectations set by others. He or she may also feel pressure to succeed.
For some teens, normal developmental changes can be very unsettling when combined with other events, such as:
Changes in their families, such as divorce, siblings moving out, or moving to a new town
Changes in friendships
Problems in school

Other losses

Suicide is a terrible killer of the young. India’s adolescent and youth population – people below the age of 25 – accounts for 53.7% of the population. A pressing concern for India’s youth population is a high number of suicides. According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), in 2020, a student took their own life every 42 minutes; that is, every day, more than 34 students died by suicide.

Kota is a major coaching hub of the country for competitive examination preparations and has a number of engineering and medical coaching institutes.More than 1.5 lakh students from across the nation come here to prepare for major exams like IIT-JEE, NEET-UG, and AIIMS, among others. For two to three years, students reside here while they study for their exams. There have been more reports of student suicides in this city during the last few years. Students who can’t handle the pressure kill themselves. They do it out of a fear of failing their family’s reputation or of having no other options for a profession.

Threats of suicide are a cry for help. Always take such statements, thoughts, behaviors, or plans very seriously some key suicide risk factors:
1. A recent or significant loss This can involve the passing of a friend, family member, or pet. A split in relationship , divorce, or separation of parents.

2. A family history of suicide can be extremely important and unsettling.

3. Bullying. We are aware that being the target of bullying is a risk factor, but there is also evidence suggesting that children who bully others may be more likely to engage in suicidal conduct.

4. Cultural and religious beliefs that suicide is a noble way to resolve a personal dilemma.

5. Alcohol and other substance use disorders, as well as a propensity for mischief, disciplinary issues, and high-risk behavior.

It is alarming that this is not being recognised as a grave crisis.
An attempt can be avoided by becoming aware of the teen suicide warning signs. Keeping lines of communication open with your teen’s mates provides you the opportunity to step in and assist when necessary. Take these actions as well:

Avoid giving drugs and firearms to kids and teenagers.

If your teen has any mental health or substance addiction issues, get them help.

Encourage your teen. Stay engaged, listen, and avoid being too critical.

Educate yourself on teen suicide. The Internet, neighborhood support groups, and the public library are available resources.

The affection and care of the elders must be used to protect the young people’s innocent brains. Children will feel safe discussing their difficulties with their parents and other adults once they gain their trust. When they talk about their issues, their stress levels also drop significantly. The elderly must get friendly with one another and also impart their priceless wisdom. This will enable the youngsters to successfully navigate challenging life circumstances and grow into stronger individuals.

Teens too can take these steps to help prevent suicide if they see warning signs in a friend:
Take their friend’s behavior and talk of suicide seriously.
Encourage their friend to seek expert help. Go with the friend, if needed.
Talk right away with an adult they trust about their friend.

Suicidal behavior remains an important clinical problem and a major cause of death in youth and adults. Youth suicide constitutes a major public mental health problem. Young people and especially adolescents are by nature a vulnerable group for mental health problems.
Keep a close eye on a teen who is depressed and withdrawn. Try to keep the lines of communication open and express your concern, support, and love. A fight with a friend might not seem like a big deal to you, but for a teen it can feel immense and consuming.
